Seniors, award winners honored in pre-Dad Vail Regatta banquet

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Philadelphia University department of athletics and the men’s and women’s rowing staff honored the teams’ five seniors and various award winners in a pre-Dad Vail Regatta banquet Wednesday night at Kennan’s Valley View Inn.

Head coach Chris O’Brien and Philadelphia University director of athletics Tom Shirley presented awards to the five seniors on the men’s and women’s rowing teams: Alex Jones, Christopher Valotta, Juila Mazza, Leah Nixon and Casey Watrous.

Then O’Brien presented various individual awards. The Hammer Award, which goes to the male and female who had the fastest erg time, were given to Logan Smith and Mary Costello. The Most Improved Award was presented to Kevin Hines and Mazza. Finally, the Attitude Award went to Eliza Brooks, Michelle Summers and Smith.

The evening ended with the team captains presenting gifts to the seniors and coaching staff.

On Friday, the Rams and Lady Rams will compete in the Dad Vail. The men’s Varsity Four gets started at 7:36 a.m. The women’s Varsity Four competes in the Division II/III race at 8 a.m. The men’s Varsity Pair competes at 9:42 a.m., and the women’s pair goes at 10:30 a.m. The final heat race for Philadelphia is the women’s Novice Four at 3:12 p.m.
