The Intramural Program (run by the Department of Athletics) provides the opportunity for the campus community to participate in structured and competitive sports that are organized into leagues, tournaments, and one-day events. Since the inception of the Gallagher Center –Intramurals at Jefferson has been able to reach new heights and expand in several areas. Participation numbers maintain a steady increase from year to year. In fact, almost 50% of the student body participated in some level of Intramural activity in 2010-2011. The value of Recreational Sports in Higher Education is emphasized in the notion that Intramural programming not only helps recruit students but helps retain them as well.
Certain events can be modified/added based on participation and student interest. All students, faculty, and staff are welcome to participate. Employment opportunities also exist - students staff most events as officials, scoreboard operators, first aid officials and facility monitors. All indoor events are held on either the Main Court or Aux Court of the Gallagher Center and outdoor event locations vary between Ronson Field, Alumni Field, and at times Ravenhill Field.
There are several far-reaching benefits to participating in Intramurals and other Recreational activities (club sports, group exercise classes, wellness programming etc.) at Jefferson. These mediums serve as a stress reducer, improve self-confidence, and enhance leadership skills. In addition, students feel more a part of the college community and learn team-building skills. Perhaps most significant, these alleys facilitate interaction with diverse sets of people and aids in time management skills.
