Temple's Gallergy of Success Page
PHILADELPHIA – Jefferson (Philadelphia University + Thomas Jefferson University) Assistant Vice President for Athletics and Head Women's Basketball Coach Tom Shirley received a 2017 Gallery of Success award from Temple University this fall. Each fall Temple honors alumni for each of its 17 schools and colleges.
Shirley earned the recognition from the School of Sport, Tourism and Hospitality Management.
The Jefferson Athletic Director enters his 29th year with the Rams in 2017-18 after joining the athletic department in 1989.
On July 1, 2017, Philadelphia University integrated with Thomas Jefferson University to become Jefferson, which Shirley will be in charge of navigating the athletic department through.
Coupled with the transition to Jefferson, Shirley created the current landscape of Rams Athletics with the addition of women's volleyball in 1997, men's and women's cross country in 2015, women's rowing in 2006, men's and women's track and field in 2012, women's golf in 2016.
Since joining the CACC, the Rams have won 27 conference titles, including an unprecedented six during the 2008-09 season. The department earned the Restaino Cup—the men's and women's cups are given annually to the institutions that perform the best across the board in CACC-sponsored sports—on the women's side seven times (2007, 2009, 2010, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017).
Shirley earned his master's degree in education from Temple in 1984.
The Temple Gallery of Success exhibit, located on the lower level of Temple's Mitten Hall, showcases Temple University alumni who have utilized the skills and knowledge learned at Temple to chart their own paths in their studied fields. A new class of inspirational alumni from each of Temple's 17 schools and colleges is honored every fall during Homecoming weekend, and highlighted for one year in the Gallery of Success Showcase.
