J. Thomas Becker, the 2018 Lifetime Achievement Award Winner and 2018 Hall of Fame inductee, has been a great supporter of athletics during his 28-plus years as a University employee. He currently serves the school as the Associate Vice President for Operations and is approaching three decades at the facilities helm.
Becker managed the largest facility growth in the University’s history, which included the Paul J. Gutman Library, the Tuttleman Center, the Kanbar Campus Center, the Arlen Specter Center and the Lawrence N. Field DEC Center. His most impactful contribution to athletics came in construction of the Gallagher Athletic and Recreation Center.
The Gallagher Athletic and Recreation Center opened its doors in August 2006 as an addition to Althouse Hall. It houses Herb Magee court, home to the men’s and women’s basketball and volleyball teams. The Gallagher Center added two more basketball courts to the building, a state-of-the-art fitness center, aerobics studio, racquetball court, elevated track and 251-space underground parking garage as well as the athletic department offices.
Becker plans, navigates and manages all facility upgrades, maintenance, new construction, capital procurements, activities support, lease fit-outs and renovations.
He also initiated an annual scholarship in his family’s name to support tuition at the school.
Becker also oversees athletics’ on-field and court improvements, upgrades and renovations.
