Philadelphia, PA- Despite a career-high 23
points from sophomore forward Christine Wooding
(Northfield, NJ/ Mainland), the Philadelphia University women's
basketball team (4-6, 3-0 CACC) fell 69-59 to a hot Kutztown
University Lady Bears (7-2, 0-0 PSAC) squad on Tuesday afternoon.
The Lady Rams held the advantage at the free-throw line
(75%-50%) and on rebounds (47-40), but lost the shooting battle
(33%-40%).
KU also got the edge from three-point land (7-25) vs. PhilaU
(3-15).
PhilaU never led in the contest as KU started on a 20-12 run in
the first half, including 13 points from Lady Bear leading scorer
Melissa McQuade who finished the day with 19 points and seven
boards.
A jumper by PhilaU's Wooding at the 11:24 mark would cut the KU
lead to six, but KU stayed up 27-16 on a Chauntelle Schroeder
jumper just two minutes later.
PhilaU senior center Jessica Romano (Horsham,
PA/ Hatboro-Horsham) got the Lady Rams as close as they would come
in the final minutes of the first stanza on a layup at 4:44 to make
it 28-21, but KU closed out the half up 27-25.
Romano finished with the team's only double-double, 12 points/12
rebounds on the day.
The second half saw KU surge ahead by as many as 21 at the 8:37
mark (63-42), but the Lady Rams pieced together a 12-4 run
after-beginning with a layup from PhilaU senior forward
Kate Brennan (Stratford, NJ/ Sterling).
Brennan had nine points and five rebounds in the contest.
A late trey by PhilaU sophomore guard Deanna
Kelly (Lafayette Hill, PA/ Archbishop Carroll) was not
enough as the Lady Rams fell 69-59 at the hands of the Lady Bears.
PhilaU returns to the hardwood in the New Year on Monday
(1/4/10) when they host Adelphi University at 5 p.m. in the
Gallagher Athletic Center.
