Men's Tennis Ends Season in 5-0 Loss at NCAA Tournament

Flushing, NY- The Philadelphia University men's tennis team (18-8, 10-0 CACC) saw their championship season come to an end at the NCAA East Regional Tournament, hosted by Queens College on Thursday.  The #6 seeded Rams fell 5-0 to the #3 seeded Stonehill College (22-3) in the single elimination tournament.

All three PhilaU doubles teams went down to start off the match, with the #1 freshmen team of Adrian Torroella-Cruz (Gainesville, FL/ Gainesville) and Manoli Sgouros (Forest Hills, NY/ Holy Cross HS) dropping a tough 8-5 set to SC's Tim Fayed and Mike Mashkevich.

With the Skyhawks leading 3-0 going into singles competition, #4 sophomore Tom McAvoy (Phoenixville, PA/ Phoenixville) fell 6-2, 6-1 to SC's Jason Allegretti and #6 sophomore Mario Bermeo (Tannersville, PA/ Notre Dame HS) dropped his match 6-1, 6-1 to SC's Jon Burke to finalize the defeat.

The NCAA Tournament loss does not sum up the year the Ram's had in 2008-09, winning the inaugural CACC Men's Tennis Team Championship over the University of the Sciences and sweeping all the individual crowns as Torroella-Cruz took the singles title and teamed up with Sgouros for the doubles championship.  For his efforts, Torroella-Cruz was named both CACC Men's Tennis Player and Rookie of the Year.

The women's team will compete in their own NCAA East Regional match tomorrow (5/8) vs. #1 seed Concordia College played in Boston at 2:30 p.m.
