Women's basketball pushes past Georgian Court in CACC opener, 83-75

PHILADELPHIA – The Philadelphia University women's basketball team rallied to pick up an 83-75 victory over Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) opponent Georgian Court in the conference opener for both teams Wednesday night in the Gallagher Center.

Philadelphia (2-0, 1-0 CACC) overcame a 57-49 deficit with 16:57 left in the contest to pull out the victory. With the help of five points from sophomore guard Bria Young (Philadelphia, Pa./Prep Charter), the Rams outscored the Lions (0-3, 0-1 CACC) 11-1 over a 5:53 stretch to take a 60-59 lead—the team's first advantage since they led 4-3.

A 3-pointer from junior guard Najah Jacobs (Philadelphia, Pa./Central) extended Philadelphia's cushion to 68-62 with 7:21 left. After Georgian Court trimmed Philadelphia's lead to one on an Ashiri Broadwater jumper, the Rams responded with six unanswered points to take a 76-69 lead with 3:05 to play.

Young, Jacobs, and sophomore forward Tori Arnao (Newtown, Pa./Archbishop Wood) all scored 15 points in the victory. Arnao grabbed a team-high 12 rebounds to complete her first double-double of the season.

Senior guard Samatha Morris (Wenonah, N.J./Deptford) added 10 points and seven rebounds.

Broadwater finished the game with a game-high 18 points and 13 rebounds for the Lions. Four of Broadwater's points came during a brief 6-0 spurt that gave Georgian Court a game-high 11-point lead (36-25). Brittany Baker contributed 16 points, while Tahira Matthew had 10 points.

Philadelphia was 28-of-64 shooting (43.8 percent) from the field, and went 21-of-34 (61.8 percent) at the free throw line. Georgian Court shot 33-of-70 (47.1 percent) from the floor, and 8-of-19 (42.1 percent) from the charity stripe.

The Lions owned a 44-42 rebounding edge.

Philadelphia takes on visiting Kutztown in a non-conference match on Saturday, Nov. 16 at 2 p.m. in the Gallagher Center.
