Women's basketball edged out by East Stroudsburg, 66-63

EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. – The Philadelphia University women's basketball team was edged by host East Stroudsburg 66-63 on the second day of the 49th Annual Pocono Classic Sunday in Koehler Fieldhouse.

Sophomore forward Alex Heck (Willow Grove, Pa./Archbishop Wood) came off the bench to lead the Rams' (3-3) offense with a career-high 22 points on 9-of-16 shooting in 29 minutes. J

unior guard Najah Jacobs (Philadelphia, Pa./Central) contributed 13 points and seven assists. Sophomore forward Mary Newell (Lansdale, Pa./Villa Joseph Marie) recorded 10 points and 10 rebounds for her first career double-double.

Heck and Jacobs were named to the All-Tournament team.

Sophomore forward Tori Arnao (Newtown, Pa./Archbishop Wood) gave Philadelphia a 63-62 advantage with a lay-up with 53 seconds to play. On East Stroudsburg's (3-2) next possession, Audrey Stapleton hit two free throws to put the Warriors back in front by a point (64-63).

After East Stroudsburg got the ball back after a missed layup by Philadelphia, Ryann Fiascki drained two more free throws to push the gap to 66-63 with eight seconds on the clock.

Philadelphia had a chance to send the contest to overtime, but junior guard Monica Schacker (Doylestown, Pa./Germantown Academy) had her 3-point shot blocked at the buzzer.

In the first half, the Rams scored 17 straight points to overcome an 11-point deficit and take a 28-22 lead with 5:02 left.  Jacobs, Newell, and Heck all scored four points during the run.

Two Heck free throws with 3:57 remaining in the half gave the Rams a game-high eight-point lead (32-24).

East Stroudsburg used a 13-5 run during the second half to break a 38-all tie and take a 51-43 lead at the 12:22 mark.

East Stroudsburg got 19 points from Allison Howard. Jessica Martin contributed 12 points and 14 rebounds.

Philadelphia shot 26-of-58 (44.8 percent) from the field while East Stroudsburg was held to 22-of-60 (36.7 percent) shooting. The Warriors knocked down 17 of their 25 (68.0 percent) free throw attempts and the Rams went 10-of-15 (66.7 percent) at the line.

The Warriors owned a 44-33 rebounding advantage.

Philadelphia returns home to take on Chestnut Hill in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference contest on Wednesday, Dec. 4 at 6 p.m. in the Gallagher Center.
