Box Score BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – Junior guard Najah Jacobs (Philadelphia, Pa./Central) poured in a career-high 26 points and sophomore guard Bria Young (Philadelphia, Pa./Prep Charter) netted a career-high 16 points in the Philadelphia University women's basketball team's 85-82 loss to Bloomsburg in a non-conference game Saturday afternoon in Nelson Field House.
Philadelphia is now 8-4 after having its five-game winning streak snapped. Bloomsburg improves to 11-3.
Jacobs—whose previous career-high was 25 points against Goldey-Beacom on Dec. 21, 2013—shot 10-of-19 from the field and recorded a team-high three assists. Young—who broke her old high of 15 points back on Nov. 13, 2013 against Georgian Court—connected on 10 of her 12 free throw attempts and tied a career-high with four steals.
Sophomore forward Mary Newell (Lansdale, Pa./Villa Joseph Marie) scored in double-figures for the third straight game with 10 points.
The Rams shot 45.5 percent (30-of-66) from the field and a season-best 80.0 percent (20-of-25) at the free throw line.
Jocelyn Ford scored a career-high 24 points for the Huskies, including the go-ahead 3-pointer with 56 seconds left. Adreana Sadowski and Catherine Noack added 20 points each.
The Huskies hit 52.5 percent (31-of-59) of their shots, including 42.9 percent (6-of-14) of their 3-pointers.
Senior guard Megan Finn (Collegeville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) hit a jumper at the 15:52 mark of the first half to cap a 10-4 run and put Philadelphia in front for the first time (10-9).
Trailing 20-18 after a Sadowski lay-up, Philadelphia would score nine consecutive points—including 3-pointers from Jacobs and junior guard Monica Schacker (Doylestown, Pa./Germantown Academy)—to establish a 27-20 advantage.
Bloomsburg would cut the lead to just a point when Marla Simmons connected on a trey at 10:02 to make the score 27-26. The triple didn't stop Philadelphia's momentum as the Rams went on a 9-2 run to take a half-high eight-point lead (36-28).
Philadelphia led at the break, 44-42.
In the second half, the Rams rattled off seven straight points, capped off by a made free throw from sophomore forward Tori Arnao (Newtown, Pa./Archbishop Wood) with 12:32 left to go, to take a game-high 11-point lead (62-51).
With 5:41 remaining and Philadelphia ahead 76-67, Bloomsburg made its push. The Huskies went on an 11-0 run, that concluded with a Ford lay-up at the 2:10 mark, to take its first lead of the second half (78-76).
Six seconds later, stepped to the line and nailed two free throws to tie the score at 78. On Philadelphia's next possession, Newell made a put-back basket to give the Rams 80-78 lead with 1:12 to play.
After Ford's go-ahead three and two Noack made free throws put the Huskies up 83-80, Newell got an offensive rebound and put-back to close the gap to one.
Noack hit two more free throws with 13 seconds left to give Bloomsburg an 85-82 lead.
Philadelphia will look to start a new streak on Thursday, Jan. 16 at Lincoln (Pa.) at 6 p.m. It will be the Rams' final non-conference game of the year.
