Women's basketball falls to Lincoln (Pa.), 71-58

LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, Pa. – The Philadelphia University women's basketball team suffered a 71-58 road loss to Lincoln (Pa.) University in the team's final non-conference contest of the season Thursday night.

Junior guard Najah Jacobs (Philadelphia, Pa./Central) led the Philadelphia (8-5) offense with a team-high 13 points, 10 coming in the opening half. Senior guard Megan Finn (Collegeville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) and junior guard Monica Schacker (Doylestown, Pa./Germantown Academy) netted 10 points each.

Sophomore forward Mary Newell (Lansdale, Pa./Villa Joseph Marie) grabbed a game- and career-high 15 rebounds—the most by a Ram in a game this season.

The Rams shot well in the first half, connecting on 42.4 percent (14-of-33) of their attempts, to build up a 36-26 halftime lead. But Philadelphia struggled in the second half as the team shot 29.0 percent (9-of-31) from the floor.

Lincoln (9-7) got a game-high 19 points and 12 rebounds from Amani Clark. Ten of Clark's 19 points came during the Lady Lions' 39-10 surge over the final 13:37.

Zephrah Pam contributed 10 points and 10 rebounds in a reserve role. Cynthia Johnson poured in 16 points—half coming in the game-altering charge.

The Lady Lions hit 35.1 percent (26-of-74) of their shots during the contest. During the final push, Lincoln shot 59.1 percent (13-of-22) from the field.

Senior guard Samantha Morris (Wenonah, N.J./Deptford) scored consecutive baskets to break a four-all tie and spark an 8-0 Philadelphia run to get the Rams out to a 12-4 lead at the 10:52 mark. After Lincoln cut the lead to four (12-8) on a Pam lay-up at 9:27, Philadelphia would outscore the home team 13-6 over a 4:02 span—capped off by a Schacker basket—to take an 11-point advantage (25-14).

The cushion grew to a half-high 13 points when Finn knocked down two free throws to make the score 34-21 with 1:42 left in the first half.

Philadelphia opened the second half with 10-4 run to take a game-high 16-point lead (46-30). The Rams owned a 48-32 lead when the Lady Lions started to cut into the gap with 11 consecutive points. Newell stopped the streak with a bucket at the 8:47 mark and allowed Philadelphia to regain a seven-point lead (50-43).

Lincoln would then go on an 11-3 run, capped two Dejah Taylor free throws with 5:01 left, to take its first lead of the night (54-53).

Philadelphia took its final lead of the night (57-56) when Schacker buried a jumper at the 3:49 mark. The Lady Lions ended the game on a 15-1 run.

Lincoln won the rebounding battle 58-47.

Philadelphia returns home to face the University of the Sciences in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference match on Saturday, Jan. 18 at 2 p.m.
