Women's basketball defeats Bloomfield 64-57; Remains perfect in CACC play

PHILADELPHIA – The Philadelphia University women's basketball team remains unblemished in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) play after defeating visiting Bloomfield 64-57 Saturday afternoon in the Gallagher Center.

Philadelphia is 9-0 in CACC play, a half-game behind Holy Family for first place in the CACC's southern division, and 11-5 overall. Philadelphia and Holy Family will put their perfect CACC records on the line on Tuesday, Jan. 28 at 6 p.m. in the Gallagher Center.

Junior guard Monica Schacker (Doylestown, Pa./Germantown Academy) knocked down three 3-pointers on her way to a game-high 15 points, 10 coming in the second half. Sophomore forward Mary Newell (Lansdale, Pa./Villa Joseph Marie) posted 13 points and 10 rebounds for her third double-double of the season.

Senior guard Samantha Morris (Wenonah, N.J./Deptford) contributed 11 points, and junior guard Najah Jacobs (Philadelphia, Pa./Central) added 10 points. Sophomore forward Tori Arnao (Newtown, Pa./Archbishop Wood) had nine points and a game-high 13 rebounds.

Lauren Deverin came off the bench to lead the Deacons (10-8, 8-3 CACC) with 15 points and eight rebounds. Morgan Taylor scored 11 points, and Ariel Wilson and Tianna Smith had 10 points each.

The game's turning point came with 15:32 to go in game and Philadelphia was trailing 36-34. Newell went to the free throw line and sank a pair of free throws that would spark an 11-0 run over a 4:22 span to put the Rams ahead 45-36.

With 7:46 left, Philadelphia's lead reached double digits for the first time when Newell connected on a 6-footer to make the score 53-43. Sophomore forward Alex Heck (Willow Grove, Pa./Archbishop Wood) gave the Rams their largest lead of the afternoon (60-47) with 6:15 remaining by hitting a successful baseline jumper.

The Deacons got as close as six (63-57) after a 2-for-2 trip at the charity stripe with 36 seconds to play.

In the first half, Bloomfield led by seven (20-13) after going on a 12-1 run, capped off by a Smith put-back at the 8:20 mark, to erase a four-point Philadelphia lead. The Rams chipped away, eventually tying the score at 28 on a Schacker triple with 1:25 to go in the half. Deverin gave the Deacons a 30-28 halftime lead by hitting a three-footer with six seconds on the clock.

The Rams shot 53.2 percent (25-of-47) from the field for the game, 60.9 percent (14-of-23) in the second half. Blooomfield was a 30.1 percent (22-of-73) shooting team. Philadelphia won the rebounding battle 41-38.
