Box Score LAKEWOOD, N.J. – Senior guard Najah Jacobs (Philadelphia, Pa./Central) poured in a season-high 27 points in the Philadelphia University women's basketball team's 75-59 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) victory over Georgian Court Thursday night in the Wellness Center.
Philadelphia remains undefeated, improving to 3-0 overall, 1-0 in the CACC. Georgian Court falls to 0-3 overall and 0-1 in conference play.
Jacobs—the reigning CACC player of the week—shot 10-of-13 from the field and 7-of-9 at the free throw line in 37 minutes of action.
Junior guard Bria Young (Philadelphia, Pa./Prep Charter) racked up 16 points, five rebounds, five assists and four steals. In her first start of the season, junior forward Tori Arnao (Newtown, Pa./Archbishop Wood) had 11 points and four rebounds. Junior forward Alex Heck (Willow Grove, Pa./Archbishop Wood) scored eight points and grabbed a game-high nine rebounds.
The Rams got off to a fast start, scoring the game's first eight points in the opening 2:22, and never looked back. Jacobs gave Philadelphia its first double-digit lead of the night with a fastbreak lay-up at the 16:25 mark to make the score 12-2.
Georgian Court was able to close the margin to 20-18 when Jaelyn Tweedy hit two free throws with 9:24 left in the half.
Philadelphia used a 15-6 surge, capped by a layup by senior guard Monica Schacker (Doylestown, Pa./Germantown Academy) at the 1:45 mark, to take a half-high 11-point advantage (35-24).
The Lions would get as close as four (38-34) after an old-fashioned 3-point play by Tahira Matthews 1:10 into the second half.
Led by four points from junior forward Mary Newell (Lansdale, Pa./Villa Joseph Marie), Philadelphia rattled off eight straight points to quickly end the Georgian Court rally and take 46-24 lead.
The Rams took a game-high 16-point lead (75-59) on a Bria Young free throw with five seconds left.
Matthews led the Lions with 15 points and six rebounds in 24 minutes, while Jess Placher contributed 11 points and six boards in 28 minutes.
Philadelphia shot 44.8 percent (30-of-67) from the floor and Georgian Court connected on 37.3 percent (23-of-61) of its attempts. The Rams controlled the paint, outscoring the Lions 54-22.
Philadelphia returns home to host Chestnut Hill in a CACC clash on Tuesday, Nov. 25 at 6 p.m.
