Women's basketball cruises to 72-50 win at Kutztown

KUTZTOWN, Pa. – A strong defensive effort combined with 25 points from Najah Jacobs (Philadelphia, Pa./Central) led the Philadelphia University women's basketball team to a 72-50 non-conference victory over Kutztown Saturday afternoon in Keystone Arena.

In its best defensive performance of the season, Philadelphia (4-0) held Kutztown to 27.1 percent (16-of-59) shooting and forced 22 turnovers, which the Rams converted into 28 points. The Rams recorded 46 rebounds and 13 steals, both season highs.

Jacobs shot 7-of-12 from the field and 10-of-11 at the free throw line to lead four Rams in double figures. Monica Schacker (Doylestown, Pa./Germantown Academy) scored a season-best 15 points, 12 in the opening half. Bria Young (Philadelphia, Pa./Prep Charter) contributed 12 points and seven steals, while Alex Heck (Willow Grove, Pa./Archbishop Wood) pitched in with 11 points and eight rebounds.

Tori Arnao (Newtown, Pa./Archbishop Wood) grabbed a season-high 18 rebounds.

Philadelphia needed a 12-0 run to get itself out of an early 5-0 deficit and move ahead by seven points on a Heck layup. Schacker had the first seven points of the surge.

After Kutztown (2-2) tied the game at 12 with seven straight points, Philadelphia would outscore the home team 12-2 over a 3:13 stretch to take a 24-14 lead and control of the contest. Young and Jacobs both had four points.

The Golden Bears closed the Ram lead to 26-21 on two Elisa Gaffney free throws at the 4:16 mark. Philadelphia answered the free throws with eight straight points to grab a half-high 34-21 advantage on a Mary Newell (Lansdale, Pa./Villa Joseph Marie) with 2:15 left in the half.

Philadelphia's lead remained in double figures the rest of the way and got as large as 27 (71-44) on two Schacker free throws with 3:20 to play in the contest.

Advia Campbell led Kutztown with 13 points and 10 rebounds in 22 minutes.

Philadelphia heads to Holy Family for a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference game on Wednesday, Dec. 3 at 6 p.m.
