McCormick records three hits as baseball falls to Palm Beach Atlantic 10-1

JUPITER, Fla. – The Philadelphia University baseball team was defeated by host Palm Beach Atlantic 10-1 on the second day of its Florida trip Friday night in the Roger Dean Complex.

Junior designated hitter Ken McCormick (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) has a strong day at the plate as he recorded three of the Rams' (0-3) eight hits and scored the team's lone run. Sophomore right fielder Fernando Garza (Laredo, Texas/Alexander) posted a pair of hits, including a leadoff double in the fourth inning.

Philadelphia jumped out to an early 1-0 in the top of the second inning on a RBI groundout by senior second baseman John Sczepanski (Lafayette Hill, Pa./La Salle College High School) to bring home McCormick from third.

Palm Beach Atlantic (3-2-1) answered in the bottom half of the third when Chris Farrell stroked a single to center field to bring around Brian Walker and Ryan Gerber.

The Sailfish tacked on increased their lead to 4-1 in the fourth thanks to a Spencer Castro solo home run and a Patrick Nickler RBI double to right field.

In the fifth inning, Nickler came up with the bases loaded and slugged a double to left center to plate all three runners to make it a 7-1 game.

Palm Beach Atlantic scored three more times in the home half of the seventh.

Nickler finished the game with three hits in four at-bats and five RBIs. Elliot Gonzalez and Castro also had three-hit games for the Sailfish, who finished with 16 base hits.

Kennie Silvestri was the winning pitcher (2-0) as he allowed one run on six hits in 7.2 innings of work and struck out five. In his collegiate debut, freshman Joe Sabatino (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) gave up four runs on nine hits and recorded two strikeouts in 3.2 innings in a losing effort (0-1).

Philadelphia and Palm Beach Atlantic will square off two more times on Saturday, Feb. 15 starting at 1 p.m.
