Box Score 2 PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. – The Philadelphia University baseball team picked up its first win of the 2014 season as it came out victorious in the second game of a doubleheader at Palm Beach Atlantic 5-1 Saturday afternoon. The Sailfish won the first game 9-5.
In his first start as a Ram, sophomore pitcher Fernando Garza (Laredo, Texas/Alexander) turned in five shutout innings and scattered just four hits to earn the win (1-0). Juniors Paul Goldman (Glen Rock N.J./Glen Rock) and Sawyer Brown (Newfield, N.J./Buena), and sophomore Luke Floer (Brewster, N.Y./North Salem) combined to allow just one unearned run over the final two innings to lock down the victory.
The Rams (1-4) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the third when senior center fielder Rick Reigner (Havertown, Pa./Monsignor Bonner) delivered a two-out RBI single to bring senior left fielder Shane Yoshiyama, who led off the frame with a double.
Philadelphia added to the advantage in the fourth with a RBI base hit from freshman second baseman David McTaggart (Wilmington, Del./St. Elizabeth) and a sacrifice fly off the bat of junior third baseman Hunter Greenwood (Salisbury, Md./James M. Bennett).
Freshman shortstop Hector Gonzalez (Laredo, Texas/United) provided the Rams' fourth run when he successfully stole home with two outs in the top of the fifth.
Palm Beach Atlantic (4-3-1) got on the board with an unearned run in the sixth thanks to a RBI single by Anthony Ortiz.
In the seventh, Garza, now the designated hitter, got the run back by driving in Gonzalez on a fielder's choice.
Reigner led the Philadelphia offense with two of the team's seven hits.
Joel Buchko went 2-for-2 in the game for the Sailfish.
In the opening game, Palm Beach Atlantic broke a five-all tie with four runs in the bottom of the eighth to take the win. Chris Farrell put the Sailfish ahead with a bases loaded walk. Andres Vazquez immediately added an insurance run with a sacrifice fly to right. Spencer Castro brought the final two runs home with a two-out single.
Junior right fielder Ken McCormick (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) started a 3-for-4 game with a two-out base hit to right to plate Reigner and give the Rams a 1-0 lead in the top of the first.
The Sailfish responded with two runs in the bottom half of the inning, one in the second, and two more in the third to build up a 5-1 cushion.
Philadelphia starting chipping away at the Palm Beach Atlantic lead in the fourth with a sacrifice fly from junior second baseman John Sczepanski () and a Yoshiyama single to pull within 5-3.
Garza came up with a sacrifice fly in the seventh and Greenwood singled home a run in the eighth to tie the game at five.
Philadelphia outhit Palm Beach Atlantic 11-6.
Farrell went 2-for-2 with two RBIs and two runs scored for the Sailfish.
Reliever Dominica Monda threw two scoreless innings to get the win. Senior Joseph Capparelli (Miami, Fla./Miami-Sunset) took the loss (0-1).
Philadelphia concludes its Florida trip with a game at Nova Southeastern on Sunday, Feb. 16 at noon.
