Box Score PHILADELPHIA -- Guard Najah Jacobs (Philadelphia, Pa./Central) scored a game-high 21 points, with 14 points coming in the second half, to help the Philadelphia University women's basketball team pick up a 78-66 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) victory over Dominican (N.Y.) in the Gallagher Center Monday afternoon.
Philadelphia improves to 12-3 overall, 6-2 in the CACC. The Rams snapped their brief two-game losing skid, while remaining undefeated in the Gallagher Center at 7-0.
Guard Bria Young (Philadelphia, Pa./Prep Charter) carried the offensive load in the opening half with 14 points, and finished with 19 points, six rebounds, four assists, and four steals. Forward Alex Heck (Willow Grove, Pa./Archbishop Wood) shot a perfect 8-of-8 from the free throw line on her way to a 16-point, 13-rebound afternoon.
As a team, Philadelphia made a season-high 25 free throws on 32 attempts.
After falling behind 4-2 on a Stefani Alston basket, Philadelphia took advantage of five Dominican (7-10, 5-3 CACC) turnovers and scored 11 of the next 13 points to grab a 15-6 lead on two Heck free throws at the 15:10 mark.
The Chargers fought back to close the margin to 20-17 when Deja Gabbidon made a basket with 11:05 left in the half. Philadelphia didn't let Dominican get any closer as it scored the next seven points to take its first double-digit lead of the game (27-17) on two more Heck free throws.
Philadelphia's first half lead reached 13 (43-30) when forward Mary Newell (Lansdale, Pa./Villa Joseph Marie) capped a 6-0 run with a buzzer-beating layup.
Dominican was only able to get as close as seven (43-36) on a Shannon McGill bucket. Philadelphia ended the threat with a 19-9 run that would extend the gap to a game-high 17 points (62-45) with 8:39 left.
Alston and McGill led the Dominican offense with 13 points each. Lashonda Hathrone added 10 points.
Philadelphia scored 23 points off of 21 Dominican turnovers, while the Chargers only got 13 points on 11 Ram turnovers.
