Box Score PHILADELPHIA – Four Philadelphia University women's basketball players scored in double figures as the Rams defeated visiting Caldwell 81-66 in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) match-up Saturday afternoon the Gallagher Center.
Philadelphia picked up its third straight victory as it improves to 14-3 overall, 8-2 against the CACC. The Rams are now 9-0 in the Gallagher Center this season.
Najah Jacobs (Philadelphia, Pa./Central) recorded a team-high 21 points on 9-of-17 shooting in the victory. Mary Newell (Lansdale, Pa./Villa Joseph Marie) poured in 17 points and grabbed eight rebounds in a reserve role. Monica Schacker (Doylestown, Pa./Germantown Academy) added 16 points, while Bria Young (Philadelphia, Pa./Prep Charter) contributed 12 points and eight boards.
Jacobs broke a 6-6 tie with a layup at the 15:59 mark and sparked an 8-2 run to give Philadelphia a 14-8 advantage. Caldwell (11-10, 8-4 CACC) got back into the game with seven straight points, capped off by an Emily Caswell back, that put the Cougars ahead 20-19 lead.
The Rams made sure that the Cougars didn't get too comfortable in front, answering right back with seven consecutive points, four from Newell, to reclaim their six-point advantage (26-20) on a Jacobs 3-pointer. Schacker pushed the gap to seven (37-30) with a bucket at the 4:21 mark.
Caswell trimmed the Philadelphia lead to 41-40 when she hit two free throws with 16:52 left in the contest. The Rams held the Cougars at bay with a 9-2 run, including four Newell points, to extend the lead to 50-42. A Newell basket with 9:35 left gave Philadelphia its first double-digit lead of the afternoon (62-52).
After Nicole Angelo hit to free throws to cut the gap to single digits (64-56), Rachel Day (Horsham, Pa./Archbishop Wood) and Schacker drained back-to-back 3-pointers to push the lead to 14 (70-56). The lead would remain in double figures the rest of the way, getting up to a game-high 18 points (79-61) on a Schacker 3-pointer with 1:53 to play.
Caswell recorded a game-high 26 points and 11 rebounds to pace Caldwell. Kristen Drogsler and Lisa Rovatsos added 10 points each.
Philadelphia welcomes Wilmington to the Gallagher Center for a CACC tilt on Tuesday, Feb. 3 at 5:30 p.m.
