Newell leads women's basketball to 69-55 win over Molloy

Box Score

PHILADELPHIA – Forward Mary Newell (Lansdale, Pa./Villa Joseph Marie) tied her career high in scoring in 19 points and grabbed a season-best 10 rebounds in the Philadelphia University women's basketball team's 69-55 non-conference victory over Molloy Sunday afternoon in the Gallagher Center.

The Rams (10-1) used an early 14-3 run, that included six of guard Monica Schacker's (Doylestown, Pa./Germantown Academy) 17 points, to take an 18-7 lead on a Newell layup with 10:04 left in the opening half.

After a Kimani Jackson basket brought the Lions (5-6) within nine (18-9), the Rams defense stepped up its game, forcing Molloy to miss 11 consecutive shots. The strong defensive play allowed Philadelphia to open up a half-high 23-9 advantage on a jumper by forward Alex Heck (Willow Grove, Pa./Archbishop Wood) at the 4:19 mark.

A 7-0 spurt over a 1:16 span, capped by a Newell three-point play with 15:32 left to play, gave the Rams a 44-24 advantage and complete control of the contest. Guard Bria Young (Philadelphia, Pa./Prep Charter) hit a 3-pointer at the 10:05 that extended the Philadelphia lead to a game-high 23 points (53-32).

Heck finished the game with 13 points and seven rebounds.

Molloy had three players in double figures, led by Jackson's 14 points. Nicole Arnone scored 12 points, while Aliyah McDonald netted 10 points.

The Rams turned in their second-best shooting performance of the year, hitting 47.8 percent (22-of-46) of their shots. The Lions shot 37.5 percent (21-of-56) overall.

Philadelphia, a winner in its last six outings, returns to Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference play with a road game at Wilmington (Del.) on Wednesday, Jan. 7. Tip off is slated for 8 p.m.
