Women's tennis earns Senior Day sweep of Molloy

PHILADELPHIA – The Philadelphia University women's tennis team honored its senior class in style Friday afternoon, picking up a 9-0 victory over visiting Molloy on the Abraham Salaman Tennis Courts.

Philadelphia improves to 7-3, while keeping Molloy winless at 0-11.

Prior to the match, the Rams recognized seniors Julia Arruda (Valinhos, Brazil/Anglo Coc Valinhos) and Jala Hamada (Giza, Egypt/Dar El-Tarbia, IGCSE), and junior Emily Chung (Manhattan Beach, Calif./Mira Costa)—who is foregoing her senior season to attend medical school—in a ceremony run by head coach Zach Elbin.

Before a point was played, Philadelphia took a 2-0 lead as Molloy only brought five players, giving the Rams wins at No. 6 singles and No. 3 doubles.

Chung and Anna Kudriavtceva (Yekaterinburg, Russia/Grammar School No. 13) was at No. 2 doubles, defeating Emily Rosen and Tiffany Nagasawa 8-1. The duo of Hamada and Arruda knocked off Megan Scali and Tatiana Rajaona 8-3.

In singles play, Chung extended her winning streak to five with a 6-0, 6-0 triumph over Rosen in the No. 3 flight. Hamada improved to 8-4 this year as she defeated Scali at No 2 singles 6-0, 6-2.

Mariana Sampaio (Brusque, Brazil/Colegio Consul Carlos Renaux) went to 8-2 overall with a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 4 against Nagasawa. At No. 5, Tabitha Porter (Sumner, Maine/Libson) was a 6-3, 6-1 winner over Krystal Bottone.

Arruda completed the sweep as she got past Rajaona in a clash of No. 1s, 6-3, 6-3.

Philadelphia welcomes Concordia (N.Y.) to the Abraham Salaman Tennis Courts for a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference match on Monday, Oct. 19 at 3 p.m.
