Box Score PHILADELPHIA – Bria Young (Philadelphia, Pa./Prep Charter) scored a team-high 20 points for the Philadelphia University women's basketball team in a season-opening 65-58 loss to visiting Queens (N.Y.) in a non-conference match Saturday afternoon in the Gallagher Center.
Tori Arnao (Newtown, Pa./Archbishop Wood) and Mary Newell (Lansdale, Pa./Villa Joseph Marie) both contributed 10 points and a game-high 12 rebounds for the Rams (0-1).
Philadelphia earned an early 4-2 first quarter advantage as Arnao and Newell made back-to-back baskets in the lane.
Behind five of Madison Rowland's 25 points, the Knights (1-0) went on a 14-2 run over a 4:48 span to open up a 16-6 lead. Young hit two free throws at the 2:52 mark to spark a 10-2 surge, that included four points each from Newell and Arnao, to close the gap to 18-16 with 43 seconds left.
After Queens led throughout the second quarter and went to the locker room up 31-23, Philadelphia came out in the third with an 11-2 run to take a 34-33 lead on a Young defense. The Rams shot 4-of-7 from the floor and playing strong defense, forcing the Knights to shoot 0-for-5 and commit two turnovers.
Two Madison Rowland free throws with 1:21 left in the third quarter allowed the Knights to reclaim a three-point lead (39-36).
Rachel Day (Horsham, Pa./Archbishop Wood), who had nine points during the afternoon, drained one of her three 3-pointers to pull Philadelphia within a point (43-42) with 9:11 left in the contest. Madison Rowland responded with consecutive baskets to start a 16-5 run that would put Queens ahead 59-47 and seal the contest.
Along with her 25 points, Madison Rowland added eight rebounds, seven steals, and six assists. Kristen Korzevinski recorded 14 points and five rebounds, MacKenzie Rowland contributed 10 points.
The Knights finished the game shooting 50.9 percent from the field, while the Rams hit 38.3 percent of their attempts.
Philadelphia welcomes Bentley to the Gallagher Center for a non-conference clash on Saturday, Nov. 15 at 1 p.m.
