Women's basketball defeats East Stroudsburg 62-53

EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. – The Philadelphia University women's basketball team led from wire-to-wire in a 62-53 victory over East Stroudsburg University in the final game of the 51st Annual Pocono Classic on Sunday afternoon.

Philadelphia, a winner in four its of its last five, improves to 4-3 overall. The Warriors are now 1-5.

The Rams attempted to put the game away in the opening quarter, outscoring the Warriors 15-3 over the first 6:38 of the contest. Mary Newell led the surge with five points, while Tori Arnao added four more. On the defensive end, Philadelphia forced East Stroudsburg into 1-of-8 shooting and three turnovers.

The Warriors stormed back with 12 of the next 14 points to make it a two-point game (17-15) on a Tyeca Reviere bucket 18 seconds before the end of the quarter. Bria Young (Philadelphia, Pa./Prep Charter) gave the Rams a 20-15 lead after one with a 3-pointer with four seconds left.

Rachel Day (Horsham, Pa./Archbishop Wood) posted nine of the team's 15 second-quarter points, including one of her three 3-pointers with 12 seconds remaining to Philadelphia a 35-21 halftime advantage. The Rams only gave up six points in the quarter as the Warriors shot 3-of-11 and committed nine turnovers.

With 2:01 left in the third quarter, Day—who had 18 points in the win—drained another 3-pointer to cap a 14-4 surge that extended the gap to a game-high 18 points (54-36).

Arnao, the Pocono Classic MVP, scored 18 points on 8-of-12 shooting and grabbed eight rebounds. Young, who joined Arnao on the All-Tournament Team, racked up 12 points, seven assists, five rebounds, and three steals.

Newell had a team-high 11 rebounds to go along with nine points and two blocked shots.

Allison Howard was East Stroudsburg's leading scorer with 18 points, while Michelle Boggs hauled in a game-high 13 boards.

Philadelphia shot 43.6 percent and East Stroudsburg finished the game shooting 34.5 percent.

The Rams return to the Gallagher Center on Saturday, Dec. 5 to face Goldey-Beacom in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference contest at 4 p.m.
