Box Score PHILADELPHIA – The Philadelphia University women's basketball team had four players score in double figures in a 73-64 non-conference loss to Shippensburg Saturday afternoon in the Gallagher Center.
Rachel Day (Horsham, Pa./Archbishop Wood) for 4-of-7 from 3-point range to lead the Rams (6-4) with 18 points. Tori Arnao (Newtown, Pa./Archbishop Wood) contributed 17 points, on 8-of-12 shooting, and eight rebounds, while Bria Young (Philadelphia, Pa./Prep Charter) added 13 points.
Mary Newell posted her fourth double-double of the season, putting up 10 points and a team-high 11 rebounds.
The difference in the game came at the free throw line as both teams shot 26-of-60 (43.3 percent) from the field and made five 3-point baskets. Shippensburg (7-2) connected on 16 of its 21 attempts (76.2 percent) and Philadelphia shot a season-low 7-of-19 (36.8 percent) from the line.
A Day layup tied the game score at 61 with 4:51 left in the final quarter. Shippensburg got a 3-pointer from Vicky Tumasz and a jumper by Morgan Griffith, with a defensive stop in between, to take a 66-61 advantage. After Young went 1-for-2 from the line to pull the Rams within four, Haley Scullion knocked down a jumper with 3:19 showing on the clock to make the score 68-62.
Philadelphia got back to 68-64 on a Kelsey Jones reverse layup, but Shippensburg closed out the final 1:25 by scoring the last five points of the contest.
The Rams shot 52.6 percent in the opening quarter, and got eight points from Arnao, to get out to a 20-14 advantage. Shippensburg flipped the script in the second, shooting 54.5 percent from the floor and 8-of-9 at the line, to send the game to halftime tied at 35.
Philadelphia went into the fourth quarter with a two-point cushion (52-50) after going 7-of-14 from the floor, but just 2-of-8 from the charity stripe.
Logan Snyder and Griffith both scored 18 points to lead the Red Raiders. Griffith also added a game-high 13 rebounds.
Philadelphia returns to action with a non-conference clash against West Chester on Sunday, Dec. 13 at 2 p.m. in the Gallagher Center.
