Box Score PHILADELPHIA – The Philadelphia University women's basketball team suffered a 77-58 non-conference setback to a hot-shooting West Chester University squad Sunday afternoon in the Gallagher Center.
Rachel Day (Horsham, Pa./Archbishop Wood) connected on five of her eight attempts, including 3-of-5 from 3-point range, to lead Philadelphia (6-5) with 15 points. Tori Arnao (Newtown, Pa./Archbishop Wood) tallied 14 points and a team-best nine boards. Bria Young (Philadelphia, Pa./Prep Charter) added 11 points.
Led by Kendall Benovy's 16 points on 6-of-9 shooting—3-of-4 from three, West Chester (6-4) shot 28-of-55 (50.9 percent) from the floor, 12-of-23 (52.2 percent) from behind the arc, and 9-of-11 at the free throw line.
In reserve roles, Camden Boehner and Porscha Speller both hit three 3-pointers to add 13 and 11 points, respectively. Dallas Ely poured in 12 points.
After the teams traded the lead four times in the opening four minutes, the Golden Rams used 3-pointers from Benovy and Boehner to go on an 11-0 run to open up a 16-6 lead with 2:47 left in the first quarter. Philadelphia came right back with seven points in a row, capped by a Day layup, to close the gap to 16-13.
Mariah Powell opened the second quarter with a three-point play to let the Golden Rams reestablish an eight-point cushion (21-13). Later in the quarter with West Chester up 24-16, Jackie McCarron (Harleysville, Pa./Lansdale Catholic) scored four straight points, as part of a six-point afternoon, to bring Philadelphia within 24-20 with 6:38 left before halftime.
The Golden Rams knocked down two more 3-pointers as part of a 10-3 surge that would extend the margin to 34-23. After Day went 2-for-2 from the line to bring Philadelphia within 34-28, Boehner hit West Chester's seventh 3-pointer of the half to make the score 37-28 at the break.
For the first 5:30 of the third quarter, the gap fluctuated between eight and 12 points. Then, Boehner dialed up another 3-pointer to give the visitors their largest lead of the quarter, 50-37 with 4:26 remaining. Young made a pair of jumpers, with a Day triple in between, to quickly cut the deficit to eight.
In the fourth, Arnao went 1-for-2 from the line to make the score 59-50 at the 8:04 mark. It would be the last time the game would be in single digits as West Chester countered with seven points in a row to push the gap to 66-50.
Philadelphia shot 22-of-51 (43.1 percent) from the floor, 4-of-11 (36.4 percent) from three. West Chester, thanks to 11 rebounds from Anna Kuntz, owned a 36-26 rebounding advantage.
The Rams have a week off before heading to Holy Family for a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference contest on Sunday, Dec. 20 at 1 p.m.
