Women's basketball moves into second in southern division with 80-65 win over Holy Family

PHILADELPHIA – Four Philadelphia University women's basketball players scored in double figures, two recorded double-doubles, as the Rams picked up an 80-65 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) victory over Holy Family in a battle for second place in the southern division Thursday night in the Gallagher Center.

Philadelphia is now 17-5 overall and 11-3 in the CACC, a full game ahead of Holy Family who is now 14-10 overall and 11-5 against the conference.

Senior guard Najah Jacobs (Philadelphia, Pa.) scored 16 points in the second half, which the Rams outscored the Tigers 42-24, on her way to a season-high 26 points. Senior guard Monica Schacker (Doylestown, Pa./Germantown Academy) hit four 3-pointers as part of a 17-point performance.

Junior forwards Tori Arnao (Newtown, Pa./Archbishop Wood) and Alex Heck (Willow Grove, Pa./Archbishop Wood) each had a double-double. Arnao recorded 10 points and a game-high 15 rebounds, while Heck contributed 15 points and 12 rebounds.

The Rams opened up a 50-43 advantage when Arnao capped a run of seven straight Philadelphia points with a jumper at the 15:58 of the second half. Jacobs started the surge with a 3-pointer and two free throws. Holy Family responded with an 11-3 surge, which included six Abigail Iannotti points, to move in front 57-56.

The Rams were down long as Jacobs hit a jumper on Philadelphia's next possession and sparked a 19-5 run that gave the home team a 75-61 lead. Jacobs led the charge with seven points, while guard Bria Young (Philadelphia, Pa./Prep Charter), Heck, and Schacker all added four. Philadelphia was 7-of-14 from the floor, while Holy Family shot 1-of-12 and turned the ball over twice.

Philadelphia opened the game with 17 of the first 22 points over a span of 5:31. Schacker had eight points, while Jacobs pitched in with seven. The lead grew to 13 (27-14) on a Jacobs three-point play with 10:58 left in the half. Holy Family outscored Philadelphia 27-11 the rest of the way to take a 41-38 lead to the locker room.

Iannotti, who shot 9-of-12 from the field, led the Tigers with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Sarah Pawlak added 14 points.

Philadelphia travels to Nyack for a CACC contest on Saturday, Feb. 14 at 1 p.m.
