Women's basketball cruises into CACC Tournament semis with 82-63 win over Dominican (N.Y.)

PHILADELPHIA – The Philadelphia University women's basketball team will make a return trip to the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Tournament semifinals after picking up an 82-63 wire-to-wire victory over Dominican (N.Y.) in a CACC Tournament quarterfinal Saturday afternoon in the Gallagher Center.

Philadelphia—the second seed from the southern division—improves to 21-7 overall, 14-2 in the Gallagher Center. The Rams have reached the semifinals in back-to-back seasons for the first time since joining the CACC in 2004-05.

Philadelphia's semifinal round opponent will be northern division champion Caldwell, an 87-85 overtime winner over Goldey-Beacom, on Friday, March 6 at 2 p.m. in the Gallagher Center. The Rams knocked off the Cougars 81-66 in their only regular season meeting on Jan. 31 in Philadelphia.

All-CACC first team selection Najah Jacobs (Philadelphia, Pa./Central) led the Rams with a game-high 29 points and five rebounds. In the second half, Jacobs scored 21 points on 4-of-8 shooting from the floor and 13-of-13 shooting at the free throw line.

Forward Mary Newell (Lansdale, Pa./Villa Joseph Marie) had a big first half, scoring 15 points, on her way to a 17-point, eight-rebound afternoon. Guard Bria Young (Philadelphia, Pa./Prep Charter), an All-CACC third team pick, added 13 points.

Newell made a free throw at the 11:58 mark to start an 11-2 run that gave Philadelphia a 25-11 advantage.  Newell and Young led the charge with five points each. Dominican shot 1-of-11 from the field during the 4:41 stretch.

After the Chargers (15-14) closed the gap to 10 on a Deja Gabbidon layup, the Rams scored 10 straight points, capped off by two Monica Schacker (Doylestown, Pa./Germantown Academy) free throws, to pull ahead 35-15 with 2:42 left in in the half. Philadelphia, who shot 58.1 percent (18-of-31) in the first half, led 42-19 at the break.

The Rams weren't threatened in the second half as the Chargers only got as close as 16 in the final 20 minutes.

Gabbidon had 19 points for the Chargers, while Lashonda Hathorne added 17 points.

Philadelphia finished the game shooting 49.1 percent (28-of-57) overall and 92.6 percent (25-of-27) at the free throw line. Dominican hit 35.7 percent (20-of-56) of its shots and 76.9 percent (20-of-26) of its free throws.
