Women's basketball falls Holy Family 79-75 in CACC Tournament final

PHILADELPHIA – The Philadelphia University women's basketball team fell to Holy Family in the final of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Tournament on Saturday afternoon in the Gallagher Center.

With the defeat, Philadelphia is now 22-8 overall. The loss does not necessarily end the Rams' season as they entered the contest seventh in the NCAA Division II East Region Rankings. The field of eight for the regional tournament will be announced on Sunday, March 8 at 10 p.m. on www.ncaa.com.

Holy Family is now 20-10 overall and earns the CACC's automatic bid into the regional tournament.

The Rams had a balanced attack with five players in double figures, led by senior guard Najah Jacobs (Philadelphia, Pa./Central) and junior forward Mary Newell (Lansdale, Pa./Villa Joseph Marie) who had 18 points each. Newell also had a team-high nine rebounds.

Junior guard Bria Young (Philadelphia, Pa./Prep Charter), senior guard Monica Schacker (Doylestown, Pa./Germantown Academy), and junior forward Alex Heck (Willow Grove, Pa./Archbishop Wood) poured in 13 points a piece.

Jacobs and Schacker represented Philadelphia University on the CACC All-Tournament Team.

The Rams appeared to have broken open a tight contest with an 11-1 run, that included five points from Young, to move ahead 64-52 on a Schacker 3-pointer with 7:20 left. Philadelphia was 3-for-4 shooting during the spurt, while Holy Family was 0-for-3.

With the Rams leading 74-64 at the 3:47, the Tigers took over the game, scoring 13 straight points over a 3:35 stretch to grab a 77-74 advantage. Jill Conroy headed up the run with five of her 18 points. Holy Family shot 4-of-6 from the floor and 5-of-7 at the free throw line. The Rams were 0-of-3 and turned the ball over three times.

Schacker had an opportunity to tie the game at the line as she was fouled on a 3-point attempt with four seconds left. After making the first, Schacker missed the second. Schacker intentionally missed the final attempt, but the Tigers' Erin Fenningham grabbed the rebound to seal the game.

Fenningham poured in a career-high 36 points, on 11-of-18 shooting, to pace Holy Family. Sarah Pawlak grabbed 10 rebounds.

The Rams shot 48.1 percent (25-of-52) from the field, 61.5 percent (8-of-13) from 3-point range. Holy Family connected on 46.8 percent (22-of-47) of its shots, 64.3 percent (9-of-14) of its 3-pointers.
