Essential Alumni: Tori Arnao

As we all get through this tough time together, JeffersonRams.com would like to recognize our alumni who have been risking their health working as "essential personnel" during the COVID-19 pandemic. Thank you for all that you do.

Story by Derek Heiserman

Tori Arnao attended Jefferson, then Philadelphia University, from 2011-18 to obtain her MBA and physician's assistant degree. She played on the Women's Basketball Team for four of those years. Over the course of her career, Tori totaled 1,242 points and 1,199 rebounds. There have only been four other players in program history to record 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds in their careers. She was also part of the 2016 CACC Championship Team.

Now, Tori works as an Orthopaedic Trauma Physician Assistant in Salisbury, Maryland. While she is not exactly on the front lines treating COVID-19 patients for their coronavirus symptoms, her orthopaedic team has been in close contact with COVID-19 patients who have sustained orthopaedic injuries.

Working in the medical field requires a lot of safety precautions, especially during a pandemic. Tori, along with the rest of the doctors and nurses, must have her temperature taken when she arrives at work. She also must confirm if she has experienced any of the main COVID-19 symptoms. If she has a fever, or any of the symptoms, she must be sent home. The staff also are required to wear a plastic face shield and a N-95 mask while seeing patients.

As hard as her job is during this time period, Tori still loves doing what she does. She said that it is very rewarding, knowing that every day she helps people become healthy again. Another aspect of Tori's job that she really likes is that it keeps her on her toes. She never knows what to expect throughout the day and she loves to take on new challenges.

Tori's time at PhilaU helped prepare her for her career in multiple ways. One way that the school prepared her for success was networking. Tori said that learning to network and talk to people has really helped her to get to the position she is in today. She also mentioned how the program at Jefferson is a very coveted program and helped prepare her for life situations. Tori built up confidence throughout her years in college and she has surpassed a fear that many people have: the fear of making mistakes and being wrong. Her confidence level and perseverance is what got her to where she is today.

When asked what she misses most about college and being a student-athlete, Tori said that she mainly misses seeing her friends all the time and just being on campus. Nowadays, she and her former teammates only see each other occasionally. She misses being able to see them at practice every day and the camaraderie that they had.

Tori's closing words echoed the importance of what she and her colleagues do on a daily basis: "Our orthopaedic care is invaluable and we strive to provide the highest level of patient care while also recognizing the health, well-being, and safety of our community throughout this pandemic."
