As we all get through this tough time together, JeffersonRams.com would like to recognize our alumni who have been risking their health working as "essential personnel" during the COVID-19 pandemic. Thank you for all that you do.
Story by Derek Heiserman
Mary Newell played basketball at Jefferson from 2012-16 under the Philadelphia University name. She was the team's starting center during her senior year and helped lead the Rams to a CACC Championship, securing a NCAA Tournament bid. Mary was also the CACC Tournament MVP. While she was at the University, she received her degree in Health Sciences. Mary now works at two different firehouses in Pennsylvania.
Mary's two main duties are to respond to emergency calls, such as when fire alarms go off in houses or businesses, and to assist people until other help arrives. This could be the difference between life and death for a victim of a fire, so it is a very important responsibility. Mary stated that her favorite part of her job is "being able to help people". She also said that she loves her co-workers and how close they have become.
Asked how she managed both schoolwork and basketball, Mary mentioned how much study halls helped throughout her collegiate career. She said that being able to go to study hall before or after practice for an hour of studying was always nice to do. Mary also praised her teammates and that everyone on the team helped each other out. She also spoke about how encouraging and dedicated her professors were. She always felt comfortable going to talk to them about anything and they were always there to listen and help.
Mary says that not much has changed for her during the pandemic, as far as working goes. She still has to go to work but there are some new safety precautions that she has to take. One is that all of the firefighters have to get their temperature taken before entering the firehouse to ensure that no worker has contracted COVID-19.. They also have to wear face masks when assisting victims of a fire until other help arrives in order to protect both parties.
In regard to how PhilaU helped prepare her for success after college, Mary again touched upon how great the professors were and how she could always count on them for help. She also mentioned her coach,
Tom Shirley, and how he prepared her for her life ahead. Mary said that being a Jefferson student-athlete taught her a lot about how to overcome adversity. Looking back on her college days, Mary said that she really misses being a part of a team. The unity that she and her teammates had was great and made everything much more fun.
