Murphy Leads Women's Basketball To Overtime Victory Over Bloomsburg

PHILADELPHIA - Cassie Murphy made the game-tying layup with one second remaining in regulation and the Thomas Jefferson University women's basketball team (8-2) outscored visiting Bloomsburg, 7-1, in overtime to defeat the Huskies, 66-60, on Saturday afternoon.

GAMEPLAY
The Rams trailed 4-2 in the early going but flipped the script with a 7-0 run. Murphy scored four points and Haley Meinel drilled a three. Bloomsburg came back with seven of the next nine to even the score at 11. The teams were tied at 14 heading into the second.

Jefferson netted the first four points of the second to go ahead 18-14. With the score 20-16, the Huskies rallied for 11 of the next 14 to take a 27-23 advantage. They maintained a four-point cushion (29-25) at halftime.

Bloomsburg continued to hold the lead through the opening minutes of the third stanza, reaching a high point of seven (38-31) after a jumper with 6:56 on the clock. That was when the Rams made their move, posting eight straight points to jump in front 39-38. Murphy recorded five points and Morgan Robinson added three. However, the Huskies answered with an 8-2 surge to regain the advantage. Bloomsburg took a narrow 49-47 lead into the fourth.

The visitors led by four (53-49) with 7:16 left in regulation. Murphy made a pair of layups to tie the score with 3:44 to play. The teams alternated baskets twice and it was deadlocked at 57 with 1:28 remaining. The Huskies took the lead with a layup at the 51 second mark. Bloomsburg had a chance to potentially seal it at the line with 12 ticks left but missed two foul shots. Sabria Lytes grabbed the rebound and Murphy made a move in the post to lay it in and force overtime.

The Huskies made a free throw just 10 seconds into the extra session to go in front but it was all Rams from that point. Jefferson locked down on defense, forcing Bloomburg to go 0-for-8 from the field and commit three turnovers the rest of the way. On the other end, Murphy put Jefferson in control for good with a layup at 2:33. Lytes added a layup (1:45), Maeve McCann converted a pair of foul shots (0:28), and Murphy tacked on another free throw (0:01) to finish off a career-high 28 points.
