PHILADELPHIA – Joe Martin is retiring as head men's golf coach after 14 seasons leading the Rams and his assistant coach of the past four years, Nick Nguyen '18, has been elevated to the top role for the 2022-23 season, Assistant Vice President for Athletics
Tom Shirley announced on Tuesday.
During his tenure, Martin led the Rams to their best finish at the CACC Championships in program history. In 2013-14, he guided Joe Parker as Parker became the first men's golfer in school history to qualify for the NCAA Division II Atlantic/East Regional Men's Golf Championship.
Martin's teams also produced great academic success, with Jefferson winning six of the nine CACC Top XVI Awards to date for having the student-athlete with the highest cumulative GPA at the conference championship.
"On behalf of the University and the department of athletics, I cannot thank
Joe Martin enough for all of his great work with our men's golf program," said Shirley. "Joe leaves the program better than he found it and he certainly brought quality young men to the University. We wish him well in his post-retirement endeavors."
"We are very excited to announce that a Jefferson graduate in Nick Nguyen will be succeeding Joe," continued Shirley. "This is a great opportunity for Nick to begin his collegiate head coaching career and we are excited to afford him that opportunity at his alma mater."
Nguyen played for the Rams from 2014-18. He was a two-time winner of the CACC Top XV Award as the student-athlete with the highest cumulative GPA at the conference championship. A three-time CACC All-Academic honoree, Nguyen was named team MVP three times and served as team captain as a junior and senior. He graduated magna cum laude with a degree in engineering with a concentration in systems and industrial engineering.
Nguyen went on to earn a master's in program management from the Naval Postgraduate School. He is a Systems Engineering Process Quality Assurance Engineer at the Naval Surface Warfare Center in Philadelphia.
The fall schedule for Nguyen's inaugural season as head coach will be announced later this summer.
