Strong Second Quarter Pushes #6/9 Women's Basketball in CACC Win Against Post
PHILADELPHIA – The #6/9 ranked Thomas Jefferson University women's basketball team (17-1, 7-0) went on a 22-7 second quarter run that kept their lead throughout the rest of the game as the Rams defeated Post University (9-7, 4-2) in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) action this past Saturday evening.
WHAT HAPPENED
After Maya Klein hit a three to begin the game for Post, Jefferson had two baskets from Sam Yencha and Emma Kuczynski to get them up 6-3. Another Kuczynski layup and Haley Meinel score made it 10-5, but the Eagles would have another Klein three to make it 10-8. Both teams would keep trading baskets through the first quarter, with Meinel having seven of her 12 points in the opening 10 minutes while Kuczynski had eight of her 10 points in the same timeframe. Sam Yencha ended the first with a tip-in layup to get the Rams ahead 23-17 heading into the second.
Morgan Robinson would score the first basket of the second quarter, with Post's Dede Stevenson making a three in response to have it 25-20. The Rams would score seven straight points with Robinson making two baskets while Emily Keehfuss had one. Keehfuss would get 5 more points from a layup and three pointer to have it at 38-22. After the Eagles scored once more, Yencha made a layup and Emily Spratt hit a jumper and three-pointer before the break, having Jefferson ahead 45-24.
Meinel would open the second half with an and-one and Yencha converted on her own basket as the Rams scored five straight points to be up 50-24. Post would control the pace of the third quarter, outscoring Jefferson 13-6 for the next 7:21 minutes, including a seven straight point stretch. Yencha would add another basket in the quarter while Spratt had four of her 11 points in the last minue and a half. Jefferson went into the fourth up 56-37.
Both teams would be even in the last quarter, with the Rams holding the slight edge 18-16. Yencha would have eight of her team-leading 21 points in the fourth. Meinel made a layup and Murphy hit both of her free throws. Spratt and Kaya Burkhart ended the game with a basket, eventually finishing the Rams 74-53 conference win.
