Alumni Spotlight: Jason Rocha
- How does what you learned as an athlete affect your life currently?
I like to think of being an athlete as a lifestyle. Top athletes understand hard work and the power of routine. Being an athlete laid the foundation of my work ethic, confidence, and strive for excellence. Some things it taught me that are still vital to my life include time management skills, discipline, and how to integrate yourself in a team environment.
- What is your fondest memory as an athlete?
My fondest memory as an athlete was homecoming 2018. We tied it late to force OT. I scored 2 goals, including the game winner in overtime. I immediately ran over to celebrate with my mom and shared an unforgettable moment! My mom passed away from cancer in September 2023.
- What do you believe is the greatest challenge facing athletes today?
I believe the greatest challenge facing athletes today is social media. We need to be mindful of the content and how much we consume. There is no shortage of studies linking social media to a variety of mental health issues. I am far from an expert on the topic, but I think the challenge for the athlete is to moderate their usage. Top athletes do not compare themselves to others, keep focus on your own goals and dreams and don't get caught up in the virtual world for too long. Today's athletes need to set restrictions and have the discipline to keep those restrictions in place.
- Do you have a message to share with current student athletes?
The only thing I would share with current student athletes is to be present in each moment. The four or five years of college go by in a blink of an eye. It's incredibly easy to just go through the motions but this isn't doing anyone good, especially your future self. Show up, be present, and give your best daily!
- What are you up to now? (career, family, hobbies)
I am blessed to have made my passion for soccer my career. Alongside my roles at Jefferson as the Men's Soccer Head Coach and Intercollegiate Athletic Recruiter, I also coach youth soccer at HEX FC. I still play as much as I can in the local leagues around Philadelphia, including being the captain of the Philadelphia Spartans (indoor semi-professional soccer team, MASL3). Outside of the game, I am always planning my next trip. It keeps me motivated to work hard so I can earn that time with my family and friends. Some hobbies include reading, exercising, golfing with my dad, and any outdoor activity.
