PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Philadelphia University baseball team suffered a 10-8 setback to visiting Kutztown University Sunday afternoon on Alumni Field.
The Rams (5-15) took 6-3 lead after scoring four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. The big hit in the inning was a two-run single with two outs off the bat of shortstop Hunter Greenwood that plated catcher T.J. Burgmann and third baseman C.J. Wallowitch.
One inning later right fielder Ryan Shellock and Wallowitch extended the lead to 8-3 with back-to-back two-out RBI base hits.
Kutztown (14-4) began the comeback in the seventh when third baseman Shayne Houck connected for a three-run homer to left field that cut the gap to 8-6. The Golden Bears tacked on four more runs in the eighth. Designated hitter Cody Montz tied the game at eight with a two-run single. Montz came around to score the go-ahead run after a single by left fielder Brad Stoudt. Houck added an insurance run with a RBI single.
Force paced the Philadelphia 12-hit attack with a 3-for-4 day at the plate and scored three times. Reigner, Wallowitch and Greenwood each had two hits.
Houck went 3-for-5 with four RBIs for the Golden Bears, who had 14 hits. Catcher Matt Albaugh, shortstop Sean McCormick, first baseman Brandon Hickey and Montz added two hits a piece.
Reliever Kyle Stoudt earned the win for Kutztown. He allowed two unearned runs on four hits and 3.1 innings. Connor Wing threw a scoreless ninth to record the save. Zach Harper took the loss for Philadelphia after allowing four runs in two-thirds of an inning.
Philadelphia opens Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) play with a doubleheader at Chestnut Hill College on Tuesday, March 20 at 4 p.m.
