Baseball drops doubleheader to Bloomsburg

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – The Philadelphia University baseball team was swept by host Bloomsburg in a non-conference doubleheader, 21-0 and 19-9, Wednesday afternoon on Litwhiler Field.

Philadelphia (10-21) wasted little time jumping on Bloomsburg starter Mike Vranesich, scoring three times in the first inning and chasing Vraneish from the game before he could record an out.

With runners at first and second, Fernando Garza (Laredo, Texas/Alexander) ripped a double to center field to plate Nick Goetz (Danbury, Conn./Danbury), who walked to start the game, and open the scored. Steven Wells (Yardley, Pa./The Hun School) followed up the Garza hit with a RBI double of his own, scoring Jeffrey Briggs (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) from third, to double the lead. Ronald Pellegrino (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown East) drove in Philadelphia's third run with a sacrifice fly.

After a second inning that saw both teams score one, the Rams increased their lead to 5-1 on a third inning solo home run by Brandon Quaranta (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Arlington).

Bloomsburg's offense surged to life in the third inning as the Huskies put up eight runs, six with two outs, to go in front 9-5.  Austin Edgette had a two-run single and Joey Casselberry drove in three with a home run.

The Rams closed the gap to 9-8 with a three-run fourth inning. Wells—who went 3-for-4 in the game—knocked in Philadelphia's sixth run with a single. Michael Melendez stepped up next and smacked a home run to left to bring the Rams within one.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Huskies kept the offense going, scoring seven times on four hits, and increasing the gap to 16-8. Edgette knocked in two with a double to right and Damin Muth added a three-run home run during the one-out rally.

Philadelphia, who scored in each of the first five innings, added a run when Briggs came home on a fifth-inning wild pitch.

Muth recorded his second three-run homer of the game in the sixth to end the scoring.

Briggs finished the game 2-for-3, including a second-inning solo home run, and three runs scored. Garza also had two hits.

Muth and Edgette each recorded three hits for Bloomsburg.

Logan Zavada came into the game for Vranesich in the first and struck out eight over four innings to get the win. Brett Chupka (White Haven, Pa./Crestwood) was the losing pitcher.

Bloomsburg scored two runs in the first and two more in the fourth to take a 4-0 lead. Then, the Huskies plated 17 runs on 13 hits in the sixth inning to increase the lead to 21-0. Edgette recorded three RBIs with a double and Joey Wrabel and Shane Woelfel added two-run doubles. Alex Castro had a two-out grand slam.

Wyatt Beakler picked up the complete-game victory, scattering three hits and striking out four.

Ryan Gonzalez (Farmingdale, N.Y./St. Dominic), Goetz, and Quaranta had one hit each for the Rams.

Philadelphia returns home to face Bloomfield in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference doubleheader on Saturday, April 9 at noon.
