PHILADELPHIA – The Philadelphia University baseball team was swept by Felician in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader on Alumni Field Saturday afternoon.
Felician scored in three of the first four innings to get out to a 4-0 advantage.
The Golden Falcons opened the scoring with a two-out RBI single from Andrew LaMura and a RBI double off the bat of Jason Polgano in the first inning. One inning later, Bruce Strickland reached on a two-out single, advanced to third on a pair of wild pitches, and scored after a third strike to Ralph Caccavale got away from catch Matthew McGee (Forrest Hill, Md./John Carroll.
Brennan Price tacked on Felician's fourth run in the fourth with a two-out base hit.
Philadelphia scored a pair of fifth inning runs to trim the Felician advantage to 4-2. With the bases loaded, McGee hit into a fielder's choice that allowed Michael Melendez (Lansdale, Pa./Christopher Dock)—who was 2-for-2 in the game—to score from third for Philadelphia's first run. Andres Valbuena (Miami, Fla./Doral Academy) added the second run with a two-hit base hit to right, plating Dan Klusman (Wilmington, Del./St. Elizabeth).
The Rams pulled within one when Melendez came home on a McGee 6-4-3 double play to make the score 4-3 in the eighth.
Felician scored an insurance run in the ninth thanks to a Ronnie Grant single.
In addition to Melendez, Brandon Quaranta (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Arlington) and Valbuena had two-hit games. Felician had six players record multiple hits, led by three from Price.
Matt Blandino went the first seven innings, striking out three and scattering seven hits, to earn the win. Casey O'Donnell (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) suffered the loss despite five strikeouts in six innings.
Philadelphia jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the nightcap on a first-inning base hit off the bat of Klusman.
The Golden Falcons responded with three runs in the top of the second to take a two-run lead. J.R. Meneses—who hit for the cycle—put Felician in front with a two-run triple. Grant increased the advantage to 3-1 with a RBI fielder's choice.
The score remained 3-1 until the sixth when Matt Kleinstein singled home two runs and Meneses followed it up with a two-run home run to widen the gap to 7-1.
Melendez hit a solo home run, his fourth of the season, during Philadelphia's half of the sixth to get the Rams back within five.
Felician tacked on five runs in the seventh and two in the eighth to take a 14-2 lead. Meneses completed his cycle with a two-out double during the five-run seventh.
Philadelphia's final run came on a pinch-hit ground out by Michael Treglia (Danbury, Conn./Danbury) in the eighth.
Dean Loucka was the winning pitcher with eight strikeouts over six innings. He allowed four hits. Jonathan Gottschall (Reading, Pa./Governor Mifflin) took the loss.
Philadelphia takes on Kutztown in a non-conference contest on Monday, April 18 at 3 p.m.
