Baseball swept by No. 20 East Stroudsburg in Virginia

DINWIDDIE Va. – The Philadelphia University baseball team was swept by No. 20 East Stroudsburg, 9-3 and 21-8, on the second day of the Dinwiddie Challenge Saturday afternoon.

In the bottom of the second inning of the opener, Michael Melendez (Lansdale, Pa./Christopher Dock) got the Rams on the board with a one-out solo home run to cut the Warrior advantage to 3-1. It was the first of Melendez's two hits in the contest.

After East Stroudsburg increased its lead to 5-1 with two runs in the top of the fourth, Philadelphia got those two runs back in the bottom of the inning to close within two. Brandon Quaranta (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Arlington) delivered a base hit to drive home Peter DiMeglio (Fishkill, N.Y./John Jay), who doubled to start the inning, for the first run. Quaranta scored the second run when David McTaggart (Wilmington, Del./St. Elizabeth) came through with a two-out triple.

East Stroudsburg tacked on four more runs in the fifth, three on a one-out home run by Carson Freeman—his second homer of the game.

Ian Allen was the winning pitcher as he struck out 11 in six innings. Casey O'Donnell (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) recorded three strikeouts over four innings in a losing effort.

McTaggart and Quaranta gave Philadelphia a 2-0 lead with back-to-back first inning solo home runs.

Then, the Warriors' offense came to life as East Stroudsburg scored 19 times in its first two times at the plate to lead 19-2 after two. The Warriors plated three runs in the first and sent 18 hitters to the plate during a 16-run, 11-hit second inning. Dylan Tamecki had five RBIs in the second.

Philadelphia had its first three batters reach base to load the bases at the start of the fourth inning. Timothy Brodhag (Warminster, Pa./William Tennent) was hit by a pitch, Nick Goetz (Danbury, Conn./Danbury) lifted a sacrifice fly to center, and Richard Joa (Matawan, N.J./Matawan Regional) singled in succession to each bring home a run in a three-run fourth.

Quaranta—who was 3-for-3 in the nightcap—drilled his second solo home run of the game and Steven Wells (Yardley, Pa./The Hun School) went deep in the next at-bat in the fifth as part of another three-run inning to draw the Rams within 19-8.

Allen closed out the scoring with a two-run homer with one away in the sixth.

Chris Crookham earned the win, while Gunnar Hayes (Ambler, Pa./Springside Chestnut Hill Academy) suffered the loss.
