Baseball uses long ball to split with No. 23 Felician

PHILADELPHIA – The Philadelphia University baseball team tied its season high of four home runs, all solo shots, as the Rams earned a big 4-1 game two victory to get a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) split with 23rd-ranked Felician University Thursday afternoon on Alumni Field. The Golden Falcons had 20 hits to secure a 13-0 win in the opener.

Brandon Quaranta (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Arlington) put Philadelphia (8-13, 6-4 CACC) in front in the Rams' second at-bat in game two with his team and conference-leading 11th home run of the season.

Felician tied the game at one after leading the bases with its first three batters of the fourth inning. Ralph Caccavale cashed in as he lofted a one-out fly ball to right field that dropped and allowed Matt Kleinstein, who doubled to start the inning, to score. J.R. Meneses didn't beat Dan Klusman's (Wilmington, Del./St. Elizabeth) throw to second base, which resulted in the second out of the inning.

The Rams needed just two pitches at the start of the fifth inning to take a 3-1 advantage. Klusman began the inning by hitting the first Jason Polgano pitch of the frame over the left field fence to give Philadelphia the lead. Nick Goetz (Danbury, Conn./Danbury) put Polgano's second inning of the inning in nearly the exact spot as Klusman for the second homer of the inning. Klusman and Goetz both have two home runs.

Steven Wells (Yardley, Pa./The Hun School) hit the Rams' fourth homer of the game, his ninth of 2017, to lead off the sixth inning to make the score 4-1.

C.J. Kilgarriff (Richboro, Pa./Council Rock North) notched his first collegiate victory, giving the Rams a strong six innings of work on the mound. He allowed just the unearned run on five hits and struck out four Golden Falcons. Abraham Almonte (Danbury, Conn./Danbury) threw a perfect seventh to record his first save of the year.

Polgano went 5.1 innings for Felician, striking out four and giving up five hits.

Richard Joa (Matawan, N.J./Matawan Regional) also had a hit for the Rams, a two-out single in the fifth.

Casey O'Donnell (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) and John Holland were locked in a pitcher's duel until Felician (16-7, 7-1 CACC) scored four times with two away in the fifth to take a 4-0 lead. With no one on base, David McTaggart (Wilmington, Del./St. Elizabeth) made a wild throw to first on a Bruce Strickland ground ball that put Strickland on second. After the miscue, Polgano hit a RBI single, Brennan Price knocked in two runs with a double, and Kleinstein had RBI base hit.

The Golden Falcons increased the lead to 10-0 with a six-run sixth inning that included a Price three-run home run. Felician scored three more times in the ninth.

Holland threw eight innings to get the win. He went into the eighth inning with a no-hitter, which Michael Melendez (Lansdale, Pa./Christopher Dock) broke up with a leadoff single in the eighth.

O'Donnell lasted six innings and struck out three batters.

Polgano had four hits to lead the Felician offense, while Andrew LaMura and Price added three hits each.

Philadelphia heads to Bloomfield for a CACC doubleheader on Saturday, April 1 at noon.
