Melendez’s walk-off gives baseball split with Post

PHILADELPHIA – Michael Melendez (Lansdale, Pa./Christopher Dock) hit a RBI single with two outs in the bottom of the 11th inning to give the Philadelphia University baseball team a 4-3 walk-off win and a split of Saturday's Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader with Post University on Alumni Field. The Eagles won game two 3-2.

With two outs in the 11th, Christopher Lorenzo (Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prep), who entered the game as a defensive substitution one inning earlier, started the rally by getting hit by a Ben Brown pitch. He would advance to second ball on a passed ball. Then, Melendez became the hero of game one as he lined a Brown offering into right field, allowing Lorenzo to safely slide home without a throw. The single was Melendez's only hit of the game.

Post (8-14-1, 5-3 CACC) took a 2-0 fifth-inning lead when Joey Picone delivered an infield single with the bases loaded to bring in the first run. In an attempt to gun down Picone, David McTaggart's (Wilmington, Del./St. Elizabeth) throw went awry and the error allowed the second run to come home.

Jeffery Briggs (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) tied the game at two with one swing of the bat in the sixth. With two outs in the frame and Richard Joa (Matawan, N.J./Matawan Regional), Briggs launched a home run over the right field fence, his second of the year, to knot the score.

After the Eagles scored a run in the eighth to take a 3-2 lead, Steven Wells (Yardley, Pa./The Hun School) sent the game to extras as he ripped a single down the right field line in the ninth to plate Briggs, who started the inning getting hit by a pitch, from second for the tying run.

Brandon Quaranta (Poughkeepsie, N.Y./Arlington) threw two scoreless innings of relief to earn the victory.

Philadelphia (9-18, 7-9 CACC) jumped out to two-run lead with back-to-back third inning RBI singles from Melendez and McTaggart.

With Eagles on second and third, Abraham Almonte (Danbury, Conn./Danbury) got Drew DeAngelis to strike out swinging. However, the third strike got away from catcher Matthew McGee (Forest Hill, Md./John Carroll) and allowed DeAngelis to reach first and Alex Wright to score Post's first run. In the next at bat, Luke Leonardi singled to right to even the game.

Post took the lead in the sixth on a throwing error that allowed Rosario Missiti to score the go-ahead run.

Led by two-hit efforts from Briggs and McTaggart, Philadelphia outhit Post 10-6.

Nick Arnold was the winning pitcher after striking out four batters in seven innings. Almonte fanned 11 Eagles, while walking none, in a complete–game loss.

Philadelphia returns to Alumni Field for a CACC doubleheader against Concordia (N.Y.) College on Monday, April 10 at noon.
