Former baseball player Garza inks deal with Tucson Saguaros

PHILADELPHIA – Former Philadelphia University baseball All-American Fernando Garza has signed a professional contract to play for the Tucson Saguaros of the Pecos League.

Garza was a member of the Rams as an infielder and pitcher for three seasons from 2014 through 2016. In his career, Garza posted a .341 batting average, 152 hits, 12 home runs, 44 doubles, 34 stolen bases, and 92 runs batted in. As a pitcher, he went 7-7 with a 3.48 earned run average and struck out 122 batters in 134.2 innings.

In 2016, Garza earned All-American recognition from the American Baseball Coaches Association, the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association, and the Division II Conference Commissioners Association. The Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Player of the Year had a .404 batting average, 80 hits, 51 RBI, 11 home runs, 54 runs scored, and a school-record 26 doubles.

The Saguaros won the Pecos League last season after defeating the Trinidad Tiggers in the championship series two games to zero.

Tucson opens the season on Thursday, May 25 against the Hollywood Stars.
