Wells named ABCA All-East Region Player of the Year

PHILADELPHIA – Philadelphia University senior first baseman Steven Wells (Yardley, Pa./The Hun School) continues to add to his list of postseason accolades as he was selected as the 2017 American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) Division II East Region Player of the Year on Wednesday.

The ABCA is the second organization to tab Wells as the region's player of the year. Wells earned the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) East Region Player of the Year last week.

In addition to his region player of the year awards, Wells has been named to the Division II Conference Commissioners Association, ABCA, and NCBWA All-East Region first team and took home the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Player of the Year award.

Wells turned in a tremendous 2017 campaign as he set career highs in batting average (.350), hits (57), runs scored (46), home runs (14), stolen bases (6), slugging percentage (.706) and on-base percentage (.465). He led the team in batting average, slugging percentage, on-base percentage, hits, and runs scored.

He finished first in the conference in total bases (115) and slugging percentage, second in home runs and on-base percentage, third in runs scored, fourth in walks, fifth in batting average, sixth in RBI (37) and doubles (12), and seventh in hits.

Philadelphia had a 19-29 overall record in 2017 season. The Rams reached the double-elimination portion of the CACC Tournament for the second year in a row.
