Baseball Suffers Two Close Losses to Davis & Elkins in North Carolina on Saturday

THOMASVILLE, N.C. – The Jefferson (Philadelphia University + Thomas Jefferson University) baseball teams (1-5) suffered two one-run losses on Saturday to Davis & Elkins in the Rams' trip to North Carolina. Jefferson is back in action on Sunday, March 4 with a doubleheader against Alderson Broaddus in Thomasville, N.C.

GAME ONE ON SATURDAY – L, 9-8 | Box Score
Jefferson suffered a 9-8 loss in game one on Saturday against Davis & Elkins. The Rams went up 2-0 in the first behind a two-run homer off the bat of Brandon Quaranta before the senior hit his second home run of the day in the top of the third. A single by Ryan Gonzalez in the same inning put Jefferson up 4-0.

An unearned run gave the Rams a five-run lead before Davis & Elkins got three back in the fourth on a three-run home run before the Senators took a 6-5 lead in the bottom of the fifth behind another three-run home run.

Jefferson regained the lead with a three-run sixth inning. Michael Taffe put down a bunt to bring in the first run before Chris Smith and Chase Fike both walked with the bases loaded, 8-6.

Davis & Elkins tied it up in the bottom of the sixth before winning the game behind a bases-loaded hit by pitch in the bottom of the seventh.

Richard Joa started the game and lasted 4.0 innings with eight strikeouts to just one walk.

Quaranta went 2-for-4 with two home runs and three RBI.

Matt McGee went 2-for-3 at the plate.

The Rams had nine hits as a team in the loss.

GAME TWO ON SATURDAY – L, 6-5 | Box Score
The Rams trailed by four heading into the bottom of the third. Jefferson chipped away at the deficit, scoring one in the third on an error followed by another off a single in the fourth by Zack Agan.

Trailing 6-2 in the sixth, Jefferson scored twice in the bottom half of the inning to get within two, 6-4.

Brandon Quaranta hit a solo shot to begin the bottom of the seventh, his third of the doubleheader and fifth of the season, to pull the Rams within one, 6-5. Davis & Elkins then brought in a new pitcher who struck out the final three batters to end the game.

Jefferson managed seven hits in the second leg of the doubleheader while drawing eight walks.

Agan went 3-for-3 with two RBI. Austin Torres hit a pinch-hit double.
