Baseball Splits Home Opener with Le Moyne on Tuesday

PHILADELPHIA – The Jefferson (Philadelphia University + Thomas Jefferson University) baseball team (3-7) split a doubleheader with Le Moyne (9-5) on Tuesday afternoon from Alumni Field. The Rams won the first game, 7-5, before falling in the second contest, 8-3.

GAME ONE – W, 7-5 | Box Score
Jefferson picked up its third win of the season in the first game of the scheduled, midweek doubleheader with the Dolphins. Le Moyne scored in the first on a solo shot before the Rams scored three in the second and four in the third to lead them to victory.

With the bases loaded, Zack Agan walked to bring in a run to tie the game, 1-1. A double play then brought in another, 2-1, before Chris Smith doubled to left field to score Andres Valbuena. The Dolphins then tied the game in the top of the third with a two-run inning.

After a Matt McGee double to begin the bottom half of the third, Austin Torres hit a two-run homer, 5-3. A sac bunt from Agan scored another in the inning before Brandon Quaranta singled another runner home to put Jefferson up 7-3.

Jonathan Gottschall picked up the win as he went 4.2 innings with two strikeouts. Quaranta got his second save of the season as he threw the top of the seventh.

GAME TWO – L, 8-3 | Box Score
Le Moyne scored all their runs in the first four innings of game two. The Dolphins went up 7-0 before Jefferson scored three in the bottom of the third.

Quaranta tripled to start the third before Chris Smith walked. A passed ball brought Quaranta home and then Smith scored on a groundout later in the inning after stealing third.

Michael Taffe knocked a two-out RBI single to give the Rams their third run, scoring Timothy Brodhag before the inning ended with a strikeout.

Quaranta went 2-for-4 in the loss. With his triple, the senior now has nine extra base hits in 10 games for a 1.152 slugging percentage.

Valbeuna also had two hits with a 2-for-3 outing.

Jefferson Baseball returns to action this weekend with a home-and-home against Shippensburg. The two teams are scheduled to meet on Saturday from Alumni Field at noon before the Rams get on the turnpike to play on the road on Sunday at 1 p.m.
