Baseball Drops Midweek Conference Pair to Wilmington on Wednesday

PHILADELPHIA – The Jefferson (Philadelphia University + Thomas Jefferson University) baseball team (4-15, 1-4 CACC) dropped an afternoon doubleheader to conference foe Wilmington (10-10, 7-1 CACC) on Wednesday from Alumni Field. The Wildcats took game one, 6-3, before also grabbing the second one, 5-2.

Zack Agan, Brandon Quaranta and Chris Smith each had two hits in the game one loss. Richard Joa also had a hit as the Rams notched seven hits as a team.

Smith singled to left field to bring home Quaranta for Jefferson's first run in the sixth inning before a two-run eighth. With runners on first aand second, a wild pitch scored Agan. Smith then singled home Joa for his second RBI of the day.

Gunnar Hayes (L, 1-2) lasted 4.1 innings as the team's starter, giving up three runs.

The Wildcats got runs in the second, fourth, fifth, eighth and ninth innings to get the win.

Wilmington jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first before tacking on three more runs in the fifth to go up 5-0.

Jefferson responded in the bottom half of the fifth with a two-run inning. Andres Valbuena singled down the right field line to start things before a double from Quaranta to put runners on second and third with one out. An error brought home Valbuena before Chris Smith's sacrifice fly scored Quaranta.

Patrick Hohlfeld (L, 0-3) started the seven-inning affair, lasting 4.0 innings as he struck out two. Both of the runs against him were unearned. C.J. Kilgarriff threw 1.0 innings while Jake Goldberg tossed the final 2.0 frames.

Quaranta had another two-hit game along with Valbuena.

Jefferson Baseball returns to action at home on Friday, March 30 and Saturday, March 31. The Rams host conference opponent Lincoln (Pa.) on Friday at 1:30 p.m. before taking on conference foe Felician on Saturday at noon.
