PHILADELPHIA – The Jefferson (Philadelphia University + Thomas Jefferson University) baseball team (8-17, 5-6 CACC) swept its Monday doubleheader over the USciences Devils (5-16, 2-8 CACC) behind a 9-4 victory in game one and a 3-2 extra-inning, walk-off home run off the bat of senior Brandon Quaranta.
MONDAY GAME ONE – W, 9-4
Jefferson used a six-run fifth inning to take a commanding 7-1 advantage over USciences in game one.
Jefferson tied the game early in the second on an RBI groundout by Austin Torres.
The Rams then took the lead for good in the fifth. Jefferson recorded four hits and capitalizes on two Devil errors for six runs. The inning was highlight by Timothy Brodhag's RBI double, Austin Torres' inside the park three-run home run which was immediately followed by Matt McGee's solo shot down the left field line.
Jonathan Gottschall (W, 2-2) earned the win as he started and went 5.0 innings with five strikeouts. Gottschall surrendered just two hits and two walks and allowed one unearned run.
Chris Smith went 3-for-4 with a double, a run and an RBI. Brodhag also had three hits as he went 3-for-5 with a double, a triple, two runs and an RBI. Richard Joa went 1-for-3 with two walks and two runs.
MONDAY GAME TWO – W, 3-2 (9)
The scheduled seven-inning game two was much closer. Jefferson scored first in the bottom of the second after capitalizing on an USciences miscue. The Devils then took a 2-1 lead on a two-run double in the fifth. The Rams responded with a sacrifice fly to tie the game in the bottom half of the inning from Chris Smith.
Jefferson had a chance in the eighth inning with the bases loaded and no outs. But two infield flies and a strikeout ended the scoring opportunity.
With two outs in the bottom of the ninth, Quaranta played hero, sending a home run over the left-center fence to walk off for the win, 3-2.
Quaranta went 4-for-5 with two doubles and the walk-off homer for three extra-base hits.
