Baseball Wins Friday CACC Pair at USciences

PHILADELPHIA – The Jefferson (Philadelphia University + Thomas Jefferson University) baseball team (13-22, 10-11 CACC) swept its road doubleheader at USciences (6-25, 3-15 CACC) on Friday afternoon from Richie Ashburn Field. The Rams won game one, 5-4, before taking game two, 5-3.

FRIDAY GAME ONE – W, 5-4 – 9 innings
Jefferson won both games on Friday, scoring five runs with nine hits in each.

The Rams scored one run in each the first, second and fourth innings with two runs in the third. USciences was trailing 5-1 after four before scoring runs in the fifth and sixth to get within one, 5-4.

Gunnar Hayes (W, 3-4) earned the start for Jefferson and pitched 6.0 inning, allowing four runs (two earned) before being relieved by Daniel Sabath (Sv, 1), who pitched the final three scoreless innings to pick up his first save.

Quaranta singled a run in the first before Andres Valbuena reached on an error in the second to give the Rams a 2-0 lead. The Devils got one back on a double in the bottom of the second before a Jefferson double off the bat of Timothy Brodhag and a sacrifice fly from Chase Fike made the score 4-1.

Brodhag walked with the bases loaded in the fourth as the Rams went up four, 5-1.

Five hits across the fifth and sixth innings scored three runs for the Devils before Sabath came into pitch for Jefferson to close out the final three innings.

FRIDAY GAME TWO – W, 5-3 – 7 innings
USciences struck first in game two with an RBI single in the second. The Rams then scored five unanswered runs to take a 5-1 edge through the top of the sixth.

McGee singled in Nick Goetz in the fourth before Brodhag notched an RBI single in the fifth.

David Saenz scored McGee on a single to left in the sixth before a wild pitch brought in another run.

Quaranta finished off the scoring with an RBI triple in the top of the sixth, 5-1.

The Devils got two back but Jefferson held on as Quaranta closed out the game in the seventh for his third save of the season.

Jefferson Baseball now plays on the road on Saturday and Sunday in New York. The Rams visit Concordia (N.Y.) on Saturday, April 21 for a 1 p.m. doubleheader before a single game on Sunday at Dominican at noon.
