CARY, N.C. – The Jefferson (Philadelphia University + Thomas Jefferson University) baseball team (0-6) dropped a close 3-2 contest to New Haven (5-1) at the D-II Challenge vs. Cancer on Saturday.
The teams combined for seven hits through the first six frames with neither able to push a run across. The Rams had runners at second and third in the sixth but a groundout squashed the scoring chance. However, Jefferson broke through for two runs in the seventh. Seniors Timothy Brodhag and Christopher Lorenzo were issued back-to-back walks with one out. Junior Austin Torres followed up with a two-run double to put the Rams ahead.
The Chargers responded with three runs in the bottom of the seventh to take a 3-2 advantage. One run came home on a base hit and two followed on an error. The Rams were able to get the tying run in scoring position in the eighth but the runner was stranded at second. Jefferson was retired in order in the ninth.
The Rams finish their North Carolina trip with a pair of games on Sunday, March 10. Jefferson plays Pace at 9:30 a.m. followed by LIU Post at 1:30 p.m.
