NUTTER FORT, W.VA. – The Jefferson (Philadelphia University + Thomas Jefferson University) baseball team (0-11) dropped the first game of a weekend series at Salem (W.Va.) (12-9), 10-7 on Friday night.
The Rams opened the scoring in the first as sophomore Arturo Figueroa crossed the plate on a wild pitch. The Tigers scored three runs in the second to take a 3-1 lead via an RBI double and a two-run triple. Salem increased the advantage to 5-1 in the third.
Jefferson rallied to tie the game with four runs in the top of the fourth. Sophomore Chase Fike blasted a two-run homer to right center, his second in the last three games. Junior Robert Wood later doubled in a pair of runs.
The score remained even at five until the eighth, when the Tigers put up a five-spot to take a 10-5 lead. Salem benefitted from two bases-loaded walks, a two-run single and an error. The Rams pushed across two runs in the top of the ninth on an RBI double by senior Matt McGee and an error. Jefferson had the tying run at the plate with runners on the corners but a strikeout clinched the victory for the Tigers.
The Rams and Tigers square off again on Saturday, March 16 at 3 p.m.
