NUTTER FORT, W.VA. – The Jefferson (Philadelphia University + Thomas Jefferson University) baseball team (2-11) picked up its first victories of 2019 with a doubleheader sweep of Salem (W.Va.) (12-11) on Saturday. The Rams won the opener, 10-5 before taking the nightcap, 17-5.
GAME ONE – W, 10-5
Jefferson struck first in the opening frame as senior Timothy Brodhag sent a solo shot over the fence in right center. The Rams added three in the second. Sophomore Chase Fike hit a lead-off home run to center, senior Andres Valbuena doubled in a run and sophomore Arturo Figueroa hit an RBI single. It was Fike's second home run in as many games and third of the week.
In the fourth, Jefferson tacked on three more runs thanks to a run-scoring double by Figueroa and a two-run blast by Brodhag, his second of the game. The Rams made it 8-0 in the sixth when Brodhag singled in junior Robert Wood.
The Tigers cut the deficit in half with four runs in the bottom of the sixth. Salem had an RBI double, a sacrifice fly and a two-run home run. Sophomore Efrain Santiago homered to left center for the Rams in the seventh and Figueroa doubled home Valbuena. The Tigers plated one final run on an error.
Junior Jack Galligan earned the victory for Jefferson, tossing 5.2 innings and striking out eight batters. He allowed just three baserunners in the first five frames.

GAME TWO – W, 17-5
The Rams picked up where they left off in game one, posting five runs in the first inning. Senior Matt McGee had an RBI single, two players scored on a hit by pitch and one each on an error and a walk. The Tigers came back with three in the bottom of the frame via an error, an RBI single and a stolen base.
Brodhag increased the advantage to 6-3 with his third homer of the day, a solo shot to center to lead off the second. Jefferson then exploded for eight runs in the third. Figueroa scored on a wild pitch, McGee knocked in a pair of runs with a single, senior Christopher Lorenzo plated McGee with a base hit, Santiago drove in two, Lorenzo came home on a groundout and Figueroa brought home Santiago with a single.
The Rams added two more in the fourth when Brodhag and McGee trotted home on a pair of errors. Fike singled in a run in the seventh to make it 17-3 before Salem tallied two in the bottom of the inning on a double and an error.
Sophomore Daniel Sabath hurled a complete game for the win, allowing five runs, three earned, on nine hits with 10 strikeouts.
