WATERBURY, Conn. – The Jefferson (Philadelphia University + Thomas Jefferson University) baseball team (19-29) rallied for four runs in the ninth inning to defeat Post (21-23), 6-3 in the opening round of the CACC Tournament on Saturday.
The Rams advance to the double-elimination portion of the conference playoffs on May 9-11 at Post. They will face the South's second seed, Wilmington (Del.), on Thursday at 11 a.m.
Both teams had multiple baserunners through the first five innings but were unable to push a run across. Jefferson broke through for the lead in the sixth. Sophomore Arturo Figueroa led off with a walk and stole second. He went to third on a fly out and scored on a base hit by sophomore Efrain Santiago.
The Eagles countered with two unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth to go ahead. Both runs scored on a single to center field. The Rams tied the score at two in the seventh via an RBI single by Figueroa.
Post regained the upper hand with a run in the eighth on a base hit. The Eagles then loaded the bases with one out but sophomore Matt Bukavich got a ground-ball double play to limit the damage.
In the ninth, junior Richard Joa led off with a walk. Junior Robert Wood had a bunt single then Figueroa singled to load the bases. Joa scored the tying run on a wild pitch and junior Austin Torres walked to load the bags again. Senior Timothy Brodhag then came up and smacked a clutch, bases-clearing double to propel Jefferson ahead.
Bukavich allowed just a two-out single in the bottom of the ninth before ending the game and earning the win.
