GLENVILLE, W. Va. – The Thomas Jefferson University baseball team (1-2) defeated Glenville State (5-1), 5-3 on Sunday for its first victory of the 2020 season.
The Rams took a 3-0 lead in the second. Sophomore Cole Kriger drew a one-out walk and stole second. With two away, senior Robert Wood and freshman Alex Gonzalez had back-to-back walks to load the bases before all three scored on an error.
Jefferson increased the advantage to four in the fifth. Junior Nick Wheeler walked and came home on a double by junior CJ Goodz. The Pioneers got on the board in the bottom of the inning with a leadoff double followed by an RBI single.
In the top of the eighth, junior Efrain Santiago came home on a sacrifice by Kriger to make it 5-1. Glenville State got within two (5-3) with a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame on a sacrifice fly and an error. In the ninth, senior Brett Chupka retired the Pioneers in order for his first save.
The Rams travel to the Dinwiddie Classic on February 22-23. Jefferson starts the weekend with a doubleheader against East Stroudsburg on Saturday at 12 p.m.
